I have lived with a loud beagle mix, an anxious rescue and a very polite lab. None of them was the dog I pictured before we met. Each one taught me the same lesson: the dog that fits your life is rarely the one that fits your daydream.

What this quiz can tell you

The ten questions ask about your home, your workday, how much noise you can live with, who else is in the house and how you feel about dog hair. Your answers point to one of six breeds, from a small apartment dog to a giant that needs a car to match. Treat the result as a place to start reading, not a verdict.

What it cannot tell you

A quiz has never met the puppy in front of you. Dogs within one breed vary a lot, and both shy Labs and calm Cattle Dogs exist. It also cannot check your lease, your budget or your allergies. No dog is allergy-proof, so if anyone at home reacts to dogs, spend time around the breed before you commit.

One thing worth doing before you choose

Write down a normal Tuesday. When do you wake up, how long are you out, and what do you do at night? Then put a dog into that day. Where does the walk fit? Who lets it out at lunch? If the plan only works on a good week, that breed may be too much for now.

Then look at the breed's worst trait, not its best one. Every breed page on this site puts an honest downside near the top. Ask yourself if you could live with it on a rainy evening when you are tired and the dog is not. That answer tells you more than any cute photo.

Before you start

Answer for the life you have today. If you work long hours now, say so, even if that may change next year. The dog lives in your real week, not the one you are planning.
